An entity tag (ETag) as an HTTP response header reverted by an HTTP/1.1 compliant web server used to regulate variation in content at a specified URL. In a scenario where the recent HTTP response has a similar ETag as a previous response, the contents are said to be similar with no need of additional downloading.
The addition of ETags was aimed at providing a more flexible way to validate entities than the last-modified date. In the instance that you are not taking advantage of the flexibility provided by ETags validation model, it is easier to eliminate ETag entirely. The elimination of ETags decreases the size of HTTP headers within the response consequent requests. This therefore improves the performance of the site.
Go to your .htaccess file and add the following to revoke ETags:
These minor changes can significantly increase performance of your site. This is in spite of the fact that they are small and do not take long to execute.
